Hawks Boys U12’s miss National Finals after losing to Haslemere
A long season drew to a conclusion on Sunday when the Boy’s U12’s travelled to Surbiton with a clear target of qualifying for the National Finals from the South Regional Finals day. The team started strongly and secured victories against Wycombe and Eastbourne. Cool finishing by Ollie Webb, Freddie Smith and James Edmiston secured the goals whilst Johnny Fox in Goal and Hamish Ferguson at the backed kept it tight. A hard fought game against Guildford with Phil Barnet, Ollie Dunn and Dominic Monroe battling hard in the middle led to a defeat but qualification to the knock out stage was assured.
Drawing Reading in the quarter final the team played their best hockey of the day, with the pace of Johnny Sunderland and the calm head of Aidan Benger asking questions of the Reading defence. Freddie Smith opened the scoring and again James and OJ put the game beyond Reading.
The Boys were now looking forward to the challenge of a string Haslemere team where a win would secure a National slot. Unfortunately it was not to be and in the final analysis Haslemere were the better team. However Hawks did not give up and played with spirit and passion throughout. It is always disappointing to lose, but the boys can be proud of their performance and they were a credit to Oxford Hawks.
Excellent support throughout the day ensured a great atmosphere and even the weather was reasonably kind. The Boys can learn from the experience and will become stronger players on the back of their experience.
We wish Haslemere and Surbiton every success in the Finals.
