Hawks U16 Girls finished third in the Home Counties League Finals
Hawks U16 Girls finished third in the Home Counties League Finals competition at Surbiton on Sunday. In their first year in the higher standard competition, Hawks had already won their regional league to qualify for the event. They faced Surbiton in their first game who made the most of their home advantage in the first half, going two goals ahead before the break. Hawks looked more confident in the second half and quickly pulled a goal back through Kasey Butler when she worked her way along the back line before flicking the ball with her reverse stick past the Surbiton keeper.
Despite further Hawks pressure, the Surrey side maintained their lead and qualified for the final against Canterbury. Hawks then faced Maidenhead for the third time in the season in the third, fourth place play-off game. The Hawks Girls started brightly and deserved their lead when a well struck penalty corner by Lucy Poffley was deflected past the keeper by Emily Black.
Maidenhead levelled the scores but another penalty corner put Hawks ahead again, this time through a straight Lucy Poffley strike. Although Hawks again took the lead from another goal from Kasey Butler, Maidenhead came back again to make the score three all at full time. Fifteen minutes of golden goal extra time could not separate the teams so for the second time this season, Hawks faced penalty strokes to determine the outcome. A thoroughly confident and well executed set of penalties from Abi Flory, Lucy Poffley, Georgia Perkins and Laura Scragg meant that Maidenhead had to score their last stroke having put their fourth one wide. The supremely calm Sophie McIvor in goal ensured victory for Hawks when she coolly saved the stroke with her trademark quick reactions.
The squad are a fantastic group of players who have played some great hockey throughout the season. They are very entertaining company and a credit to their club. Thank you to all of them and to the most committed and supportive group of parents. It's been a lot of fun!
