While most Hawks players were taking a break from Hockey and enjoying watching the World Cup at Lee Valley a few of our older players were taking part in their own World Cup events in Barcelona and Terrassa. You may also have spotted Deborah Evelyn playing for an LX 65s team against England O65s team at Lee Valley.

At the Grand Masters World Cup in Barcelona in June Hawks were represented by Caroline Baggs in the Women’s England 060 team who won a Gold medal beating Argentina in the final; Jim Felix in the men’s O60s who came away with silver after a close 1-0 defeat by the Dutch and Steve Griffiths who played in the Welsh O60s. Deborah Evelyn was also there and got a silver in the Trophy competition for the LX Women’s O65 team.

Caroline then returned to Spain to compete in the Legends Trophy at the Masters World Cup to face Australia and New Zealand who were not in Barcelona. They won again, this time beating New Zealand 4-1 in the final. Paul Dunleavy was there managing the Irish 045s and ex Hawks player Lucy Aldred brought home a World Cup bronze medal with the O40s England team.

Congratulations to Gary Mahon who also played in the Masters World Cup in Terrassa, Spain. Gary played for the Men’s Over 55s and won the gold medal beating Germany 3-0 in the final! Attached is squad photo taken at the Home Nations tournament in Lisnagarvey in June, which they also won!

Everyone involved should be congratulated for representing their teams and managing to play an amazing standard of hockey in extremely challenging conditions. Temperature at pitchside for the O60 women’s final was measured at 39 degrees. Pictured are Caroline in the team photo after the match vs Australia in Terassa, followed by Steve, Jim, Deborah and Gary.

If you are O35 then you can play Ladies masters hockey! Caroline organises the Women’s Hawks masters team that enters the South Masters league and the club is also entered in the O35s and O45s knock out cups for next season. If you are interested in playing and haven't already let Caroline know please contact her on caroline.baggs@hotmail.co.uk.
