U10 boys in Regional In2Hockey Tournament
Oxford Hawks U10s boys travelled to Surbiton on the hottest day of the year (so far) to take part in the regional In2Hockey tournament. The format of the event was a round robin followed by knock-out and with 16 teams taking part the boys knew the standard was going to be good. The first game was against Guildford who were physically stronger than Hawks and were very well structured and dominated possession with a fast pace of play. Hawks tried to match Guildford, but it was only a matter of time before Guildford's pressure told and Hawks came away with a 3-0 loss. After a huddle with coach Paul Poulter, Hawks second game against Amersham & Chalfont showed some character. There were chances at both ends and very little between the teams. Orlando produced some good kicks out of goal and Ben was instrumental in the middle but a lapse in concentration allowed A&C to pounce on some loose balls and soon they were 3-0 up. Hawks did pull a goal back with Owen linking up well down the right and Willo finishing well against the advancing keeper; 3-1 the final score. Hawks final game in the round robin was against Folkstone. With Edward working down the left and Alex driving down the right, Hawks created a number of surges forward but Folkstone packed the defence and shots on goal were few and the game finished in a frustrating 0-0 draw.
Hawks were now competing for the plate which was a knock-out format and the opposition was South Berks. From nowhere, South Berks took a 2-0 lead which inspired Hawks to raise their game. Some tough tackling and working as a team, Hawks got a goal back after some attacking play by Will created the opportunity for Ben to deliver a strike that the keeper could only watch travel into the back of the goal. Still time to get a result, Hawks put pressure on South Berks which resulted in a penalty stroke which Zac converted with confidence. With the final result 2-2, the outcome of the game was decided on penalty strokes and it was South Berks who came out on top.
Although disappointed with the results, Hawks u10 boys took some great learning points from the experience and are already plotting their path to return for the regionals next season. Thanks go to Paul Poulter for coaching the boys on the day and all the parents for their support and encouragement.
