Congratulations, Robbie Scragg!
Congratulations to Robbie Scragg who won the Oxfordshire Sports Young Volunteer 2016 award at the Oxfordshire Sports Awards at the Kassam Stadium on Friday 28th January 2017. His parents, who were at the ceremony, were delighted.
Over several years, Robbie has helped coach at Oxford Hawks junior training sessions. Last year, he coached the U12 and U14 Boys teams. He also volunteered to umpire junior matches and development games (these teams combine three or four adults with juniors and prove a successful transition from junior to adult hockey). The U14 Boys finished 5th in the very tough Mercian Home Counties Premier League and fourth in the Rover Festival. Many players from both squads also went on to be selected to take part in the Junior Development Centre and Junior Academy Centre (formerly County squad). Robbie also helped to manage U12 teams at local festivals, helping children of all abilities to enjoy taking part and competing against others.
Last year (and in previous seasons), Robbie helped coach the U12 and U14 Boys as a Young Leader at Oxford Hawks. This involved him spending at least three hours every Sunday morning helping at the Club. This would often be followed by umpiring and / or coaching at the Oxford Junior Development Centre or the U13 Boys Junior Academy Squad as Assistant Coach. Robbie did all this while continuing to play regularly for his own men’s team on a Saturday and the U18 Boys at Oxford Hawks on some Sundays.
Robbie is a very popular and well known member of our club who has grown up playing hockey at Oxford Hawks, first attending junior training at the age of six. He gets on very well with adults, his peers and also the younger players who always enjoy his help at training. Robbie stands out because if a job needs doing, Robbie will always be the one who volunteers to do it. This includes being part of ball patrol for the Ladies 1st XI National League games on Saturdays and on occasion organising the team of ball patrollers as well as coaching them.
