Rowena Hearn and Poppy Webb join England U16 squad
Hawks ladies' players Rowena Hearn and Poppy Webb had a successful Futures Cup tournament at St Albans HC last week, impressing the watching England Hockey selectors so much that they've since been invited to join the U16 squad.
Futures Cup this year was a four-day residential tournament with six teams competing in the U16 and U18 age groups - Scotland, Wales and four regional teams from England (Mercia, Pennine, Saxon and Wessex). Row, who plays for our L1s, and Poppy represented Mercia (Central England), winning their pool matches against Wales 7-0 and Scotland 2-1 (photo), with Row scoring twice against Wales. In the final, Mercia met tough opposition from Wessex (SW England), losing 2-5 - but, as you can see, they were thrilled to come away with silver medal, Scotland taking the bronze. Poppy was also chosen as the Mercia player to receive an Adidas kit award, so we're expecting to see her soon at BRN looking super-smart!
The girls' England training programme starts this month with a residential weekend camp at Lilleshall National Sports Centre, with the prospect of international matches in the spring. They have worked extremely hard to reach this stage and have a fantastic attitude toward their training and playing. We all wish the girls the best of luck as they fly the flag for Hawks.
Congratulations as well to former Hawks player Kiran Patel who has been selected into the U18 national training squad. Kiran still helps regularly with junior training on Sunday mornings while now playing his hockey at Reading. Well done also to Fergus Dunleavy, who was at Futures Cup playing in goal for Mercia U18s, narrowly losing the bronze medal match to Pennine on penalties.
