Hawks U16 Boys at Hockey Cup Regional Finals
The Under 16 boys travelled to Leicester Hockey Club on a very cold Sunday for the Regional Finals of the England Hockey Cup having come 2nd place in the first round against tough opposition from Wycombe/ Reading/ Marlow and Oxford. Also at the Regionals Finals were Leicester HC, Streetly HC and Cannock HC. It was always going to be an uphill challenge for Hawks who were missing Charlie Stoker due to illness and a number of other key players but we have a strong talented squad with a good positive spirit and knew we always had a chance. We faced a tough first match against eventual winners Leicester who won 5-0 and whose line up included a number of NAGs players. Hawks held Leicester well in the first half but were undone by some excellent individual play. The second game against Streetly was a different affair. Hawks grew in confidence and challenged well for the ball on a pitch that was more like the Sahara than a hockey pitch and slowed ball speed significantly. Hawks won 2-0 thanks to goals from Charlie Taylor. The final game against Cannock was a frustrating affair in which Hawks dominated but at times but succumbed to 3 goals in quick succession at the end of the 1st half having been rattled by umpiring decisions not going their way. Hawks gave a good account of themselves and will have learnt from this experience and the quality of play they faced.
Thanks to Tim Spittles for umpiring and Steve Elliott as assistant coach. Thanks to the loyal band of parent supporters for their encouragement throughout the day.
The players were…..
Harry Venables (captain), Aravind Prabharakan, James Hall, Tommy Dawes, John Black, Ed Wilkinson, Thomas Edmiston, Alex Elliott, Dan Cooney, David Jones, Ray Prince, Tom Butcher, Freddie Sunderland, Charlie Taylor
