Mens 5's return to winning ways against tardy wycombe

15 February 2014, 13:00, Banbury Road North (Top)

Men's 5s 4 - 3 Wycombe Men's 4s

After waiting for 90 minutes for Wycombe to arrive (some leaves on the M40 apparently..)

it seemed like the 5th team had over exerted themselves in the long warm up as they went two goals down in the first 10 minutes courtesy of some slack defensive work by messrs Spittles senior and Florey. This though was not the 4ths/5ths of old who would have gently capitulated, this was a hardened team who got back to it and started to get back in the game - led by Robbie Scragg who had a great game in terms of work rate and holding the ball up, and Ash Robbins who was everywhere.

After a few efforts at goal, it was soon apparent that it would take something special to beat the Wycombe goalie, and Adams strike from a short was certainly that, hard and low to the keepers right.

1-2 down at half time, Hawks then went another goal down from a well worked deflection which left Archie no chance in goal. In fact Hawks had been the better side for most of the game, but in the second half they moved it quicker and put the Wycombe defence under more and more pressure, with Scraggy and Ashley Robbins helped by Tim Webster, increasingly putting balls into the D, and then sniffer Hack scored one of his trademark goals to put Hawks back in the game at 2-3.  Adam Bentley then proceeded to score two goals in quick succession from hard balls hit into the Wycombe D. Libero Chair Higgins hit one of them, and he was convinced that Adam was getting out of the way, I would rather believe that his contorted stick movement was one of pre ordained intent. Whatever, Hawks got to 4-3 up and the clock was ticking away, Andy Sumser in his inimitable robust way managed to give away a short for a deliberate obstruction and then in the same breath saved one on the line. Archie Spittles made an excellent save diving to his right to stop the well hit short, and the whole team defended like Trojans as Wycombe pressed for the equaliser.

In the final hit of the game, Hawks scrambled another shot away and fortuitously the whistle went as the ball hit a Hawks foot...

A good game, in which everyone played really well. Thanks to Geoff and Dave for umpiring (and holding on for so long)

Man of the match was very close as Adam Bentley, Archie spittles and Ashley Robbins were all contenders, but Skippers deciding vote goes to Adam Bentley for a great hat trick.

Oh, forgot that Shirley got a green last game for handbags with a student, but he too played well yesterday....

Oxford 6ths next week, and one would hope that we can do better than before Christmas where we rather capitulated and lost 6-0......
