The Mens 6th XI claimed another victory last Saturday, this time 2-0 over Newbury. Earlier in the season the reverse fixture v Newbury had produced a exciting nail biter with Hawks securing a 5-4 victory with the last hit of the game. This game was nothing like that. The most exciting event was both team shelters on the Far pitch at Fortress BRN attempting to simulate helicopters in the high winds.
Newbury obviously didn't like the early start and succumbed to a straight forward 2-0 defeat despite Hawks 6s playing their least effective hockey of the season so far. Matt Tansini between the sticks had plenty of time to catch up on some outstanding college work until finally called into "action" with 2 minutes to go. That "action" was a perfectly executed kick albeit completely unchallenged by Newbury.
On the positives Jack Sobey finished off a good move in the first half and Matt Dodd scored with a rasping drive in the second. In between there was lots of huff and puff but not much quality. Too much carrying into contact and long hopeful balls. Nevertheless Tom Gilman and John Bruce put in good debut performances and the youngsters continued to look the part albeit some work on their finishing would not go amiss.
Its off to Chiswick next for the Easy Early Tour Bus assuming that the Thames does not put an welcome dampener on proceedings.
