The Ladies 4s made the trip over to Milton Keynes on a sunny but blustery Saturday afternoon. We were in away kit with a number of the team sporting freshly purchased dazzling white socks; hopefully they would blind the opposition! Unfortunately we lost the toss so started the first half looking into the sun. We had a shaky start where for some reason we decided to sit back and see how Milton Keynes could play the game. It turned out they weren’t that slick but much better than us when we weren’t trying! Thankfully after a nervous 10 minutes of playing mainly in our own 25, we found our pace and passing game and were soon applying some pressure.
We won a number of short corners in the packed Milton Keynes ‘D’ and after a few variations were tried, Lizzie scored a cracker from a classic Lizzie-Emma 1-2. We kept up the pressure to the end of the half with the inners and half backs picking up loose balls and driving forward. Some great passing play saw the MK side stretched and we scored 2 more goals from open play before the end of the half. A quick ball from Catherine found Fi who had made a fantastic lead, the ball went out to Emma/Nicky(?) and back in to find Lizzie who put the ball away. 2-0. Some more great passing play resulted in the ball going to Sandra in front of the goal who calmly used her reverse stick skills to extend our lead to 3-0.
The second half saw a more frustrated Milton Keynes side who were getting increasingly physical. Despite the aggression we were facing we kept calm and continued to play the ball around well. Aoife, making her league debut for the season at RH, had a great game with some cracking balls finding our forwards. MK had a run of play putting pressure on our backline but Phil and Becky did well to keep the majority of balls out of our ‘D’. On the few occasions they did get through Olivia made some cracking saves. The MK pressure did pay off and they managed to score one goal. Hawks went out with renewed vigour and a number of short corners were awarded to the team in White. Another Lizzie-Emma 1-2 found the back of the net. Hawks 4 – Milton Keynes 1!
A really good performance all round. Fi had an excellent game creating lots of opportunities with some great layoffs. Lizzie was her usual feisty self but maintained composure against a very physical opposition, and her hard work paid off with a hat-trick and MOM (why didn’t I put her in my fantasy league team!??!!??). Sandra had a great game, some lovely crosses in and that all important goal! Sophie D, Sophie T, Emma and Nicky all fought hard, hassling the opposition and working as a unit. Catherine enjoyed a bit more space than usual in the middle and provided a good pivot, supported by Katharine, Aoife and the inners. Phil, Becky and Olivia provided a solid defence and cleared the ball wide. All in all, a great performance and a good result. Just a shame we’re not as good at wine tasting as we are at hockey!
*please note there may be a few inaccuracies in this report, and I might have got the goals in the wrong order, but you get the gist!
