Following an unlucky loss against local rivals the week before Hawks turned up to play Wycombe at home with a strong determination to return to their pre-Christmas winning ways. Hawks immediately showed Wycombe what they were made of, switching the ball accurately around the back, with excellent re-distribution from Lottie, as well as Katie and Mel to the ever-working inner and forward players. Hawks maintained the majority of possession by continued pre-scanning and quick passing around the pitch. Hawks were relentless in their attacks on Wycombe defence; however penetration into a Wycombe-packed D was proving difficult for Hawks. Determined to find another way through the defence, Mel Carrier, during a switch around the D, hit an unstoppable ball past a very unexpecting Wycombe keeper, and managed to find the backboard. 1-0 to Hawks.
Wycombe responded quickly, and despite Hawks keeping the majority of the play in Wycombe's half, Wycombe were sharp on the break, and following an interception down the right of the pitch, managed to slip one past Hawks defence, evening the score-line. Wycombe continued to pack players into their D, causing Hawks to re-assess their goal-scoring opportunities. Emily B was unfortunate to miss out on a spectacular reverse goal following a cross from Rebecca B, which slipped just wide of the left post. Hawks were awarded a record number of short-corners across the second half, but were unfortunately unable to convert. Success finally came following a series of interlinking play from the forwards, with Rebecca B touching the ball past the keeper. Unfortunately, again Wycombe took Hawks by surprise on a break, and utilising a loose ball, powered through Hawks defence, bringing the score to 2-2. Despite sustained determination and commitment from the whole of the Hawks squad, time was not on our side, and the whistle blew before we were able to convert again.
