After a great training session with both the 1s and 3s, the ladies 2s were looking forward to their game against Hampstead and Westminster 3s. It was the long journey, perhaps, which meant Hawks lacked the intensity they had played with during the week. Struggling at times to get the ball through the opposition's press, Hawks patience and determination at the back meant the team were able to put pressure on the opposition's defence on a number of occasions. However it wasn't until the second half that Hawks were able to convert. Dribbling along the base line, Anna Clark tucked the ball under her shoulder where Claire Werlinger was waiting to deflect it, lifting the ball over the keeper.
Now 1-0 up Hawks continued to test the Hampstead and Westminster side. A few near misses combined with some quick breaks from the opposition kept Hawks supporters nervously on the edge of their seats. Luckily man of the match Sally Clark was there, as always, to mop up and protect Hawks lead. A tense final 10 minutes of the game saw Hawks do everything they could to prevent Hampstead and Westminster from scoring. Storm Sunderland, in particular, showed her skill, working the ball out of the danger zone on a number of occasions. With their supporters counting down the minutes, Hawks were able to secure the win.
A good team effort keeps Hawks 2s top of the league and puts them in good stead to play Witney next week - hope to see you there!
