Shorn of some regular players through the usual excuses of illness, flights to Tenerife, and promotions to the poorly-organised 3rd XI (only joking!), Hawks 4s travelled to Henley for their first league outing after the winter break. Henley residents must be on red alert for flooding as many of the surrounding fields were under water and the Thames was looking full and angry, much like myself later in the day after tea seeing the West Ham result. Having negotiated my way round the local Tesco car park a couple of times, I eventually found the clubhouse and the rest of the team, including debutants Robbie Scragg and Adrian Murdock, both welcome additions. Our science teacher did well not to get arrested, having not found the changing rooms, instead deciding to change in the Tesco toilets.
As we had scraped through to win 15-0 in our first fixture, our opposition Henley were undoubtedly keen on putting on a more defiant display and as a result harried us throughout. In truth, it was a fairly scrappy affair and although we dominated possession throughout the game, Henley looked dangerous on the break and forced several short corners. Their youngsters up front caused us problems with their pace and skill, but for the most part our defence held firm. With Adrian dominant in midfield, along with the classy Tom F, we started creating chances and Robin scored a quick brace of goals, the second excellently controlled and finished, before the Perth-born Murdock capped his debut with a fine finish to take us to 3-0.
Henley continued to cause us problems and got a goal back when their youngster scored with a neat finish, before man of the match Robin finished a fine hat-trick with a blazing deflection to put the result beyond doubt. Thanks to Tom’s girlfriend and Laura S for their support.
