Hawks 3s began the game positively, with good passing and defensive work all over the pitch, finding their form early and creating some beautiful linking play. Early in the first half, a quick break allowed Hawks the chance at goal; the Oxford defence were caught on the back foot and Hawks took their chances, with a quick pass from Kim outside the D to Charlotte, who took a shot which was saved only for Lizzie to tap it in from the mid air within the first few minutes of the game.
As a result Oxford fought hard against Hawks's defensive press for possession which they couldn't break. The followed quick work from Charlotte who drove the ball using her pace to Hawks's advantage and demonstrated some lovely skills to throw the Oxford defense, neatly slotting away a second goal for Hawks within the opening minutes of the game.
Oxford continued with their high pressure and were eventually rewarded with a short corner which they nicely placed it into the right post and got a goal, despite the Hawks defence putting up a good fight. However, Hawks were not fazed and continued to defend and attack as a unit, all over the pitch. With just a few minutes until half time, Hawks were caught napping, when a quick break from Oxford's centre forward resulted in a 1v1 with Evelyn in goal. A quick lifted goal was awarded just as the half time whistle blew.
Oxford fought hard against the Hawks press trying to destroy Hawks's structure, and they found a way to pin down Charlotte's relentless attacks on goal. Holding strong with the defensive work of the half backs Kim, Rachael and Mel and full backs Katie and Lottie kept Oxford out of the hawks D. Unfortunately Oxford found a way through the Hawks defensive press and broke hard getting another goal leaving it 3-2 to Oxford at half time.
With a enthusiastic half time team talk from Kim, Hawks went out with the key possession to win and play their game. Still with all to play for Hawks hit Oxford's defence hard and put Oxford on the back foot. The ball came from Kim and was worked up the pitch from the inners Laura and Charlotte with their fast play and quick work around the Oxford defence. The ball was crossed in where Lizzie was positioned perfectly in front of the goal to receive the ball and put it in the back of the Oxford net. Hawks and Oxford were drawing 3-3.
With 15 minutes left of the second half and Hawks and Oxford both fighting for the points Hawks kept Oxford off with their defensive work and put Oxford under pressure many times with quick breaks from Charlotte, Rebecca, Becca, Emily, Saskia and Beth. Evelyn made some super saves against the Oxford attackers holding them off. However Oxford got a short corner and again hit the right post, making the score 4-3 to Oxford. Hawks continued to battle against the Oxford defence and unfortunately came away on the wrong side of a close scoreline.
It was a double man of the match firstly for Kim for her superb outletting, hard work and defensive work on the pitch keeping the Oxford centre mid at bay and Charlotte for her quick-speed play which kept the Oxford defence on the back foot creating plenty of chances for the Hawks to score. Hawks found a way to forgive Oxford for knocking them off the 3rd place spot in the league when the pizza and chips turned up in the clubhouse after the match, and Kim was awarded D.O.D for owning up to thinking the match was a draw until Oxford started cheering after the final whistle!
