The Ladies 2s were looking to bounce back from their loss in the league before Christmas with a win over Milton Keynes. The game started with both teams looking for an early goal and with a short corner within the first 5 minutes it looked as though Milton Keynes would do this. But some excellent defending and a great save by Linda Billington meant the score remained 0-0.
A few minutes later Hawks were able to get their own short corner and with first attempt saved off the line by a defender and a long corner given, Hawks were able to work the ball into the D and win another short corner. This time the ball was played to the far post for Claire Werlinger to deflect the ball into the back of the net. 1-0 Hawks. A few moments later there was a break down the left with Laura Scragg, Lucy Millington and Zoe Lamb linking well together. With Zoe’s skills along the baseline she crossed the ball into the D and with the Milton Keynes defence unable to clear, Claire put the ball into the goal at close range. 2-0 Hawks. For the rest of the half possession changed hands with nobody really taking control. At half time the score was 2-0 Hawks.
The Ladies 2s were keen to go out and play better in the 2nd half after going through improvement areas at half time. Hawks managed to have more control despite Milton Keynes scoring an early goal from a well worked short corner to make the score 2-1. Minutes after Milton Keynes had scored Hawks had another break down the left, this time with Kara Kerr linking well with Maisie Robertson and Kasey Butler. Another bit of skill by Zoe saw her play the ball into the “grubbing” area for Claire to poke home after the initial save from the keeper. 3-1 Hawks.
Man of the Match, Claire then got her 4th goal of the game when a mistake from one of the Milton Keynes defenders resulted in a 1 on1 with the goal keeper. The initial shot was saved but the rebound fell kindly and she took it around the keeper to make the score 4-1 to Hawks.
The next 10 minutes saw some great defending by Briony Anyon, Georgia Perkins, Sally Clark and Vicky Martin, who kept the score at 4-1. Another attack involving Katie Merrick, Molly Warne and Storm Sunderland down the right saw Hawks awarded a short corner. The first shot from Lucy was saved but a great second phase by everyone involved, resulted in another goal this time put in by Anna Clark. 5-1 Hawks. Milton Keynes managed to score another goal but by this time the game was over. The final score was 5-2, a great start to the second half of the season for the Ladies 2s!Thanks to Evelyn Hargraves for the photos.
