Oxford Hawks travelled to Worcester to compete in the National League Indoor Division 2 North tournament. The first game saw Hawks overcome Liverpool in a fairly straightforward 7-2 win with notable performances from Lex Thomas and Bex Oakes, and key goals from the drag flicks of Takara Haines. The team then had a short wait before playing against a well drilled Stourport side. After going down to an early goal the team were thankful to 17 year old Briony Hearn for some excellent goal line clearances. This lifted the team, and with several slick pieces of play in the second half the team were able to come away with a 6-5 win.
With an overnight stay the team were fresh and well prepared for the toughest match of the tournament against the Army. Both teams were unbeaten from the previous day and the quality of hockey did not disappoint. The game started at a high tempo where Hawks were able to capitalise on with 2 quick goals from Becky Hibbert and Becky Odlin. However the Army didn’t give up and had levelled by half time. An excellent stick save by keeper Jess Hughes kept the momentum with Hawks. A well worked move straight from the training ground produced the goal of the tournament from Hearn and made the final result 5-3 to Hawks. The next game saw a young determined Lichfield side earn themselves an early penalty stroke. However 15 year old goalkeeper Olivia Clark was able to make a fantastic left glove save keeping the score sheet level. A great piece of skill from Kirsty Chapman helped joint captain Hibbert to a hat trick, and the other captain Thomas also produced a hat trick of her own, with some excellent counter attacking hockey. The final score was a convincing 8-2 win. The final game against Gloucester was key – a win for Gloucester would mean they qualified for the next round. Unsurprisingly Gloucester took the game to Hawks and within minutes were up 2-1. With some excellent tactical changes from coach Lucy Newcombe at a timeout the team were able to step up the tempo and create several chances equalising before the break. A quick goal from Thomas followed by a brace from Henri Gordon killed off the game and secured the points and league title with100% record. Hawks would like to extend a huge thank you to our sponsors, and supporters over the weekend. Hawks now travel to Nottingham on the 18/19 January to compete in the play-offs for Division One.
