I don't really know what to say about this game. Last
Wednesday we had a full squad of 15 players, but by Friday night we had a mere 12
due to various reasons, but these willing sports proved far too much as we
found out the
tax dodgers neophytes from Brunel College of FE University
had turned up with a mere 8 scholars. However, they were willing to play. In
yellow vests. On a cold winter’s day. Not stereotypical at all. Plus they all
did that 360 degree spin around with the ball that is obviously drilled into
you when you start at University, which is mightily impressive and gets you
nowhere. But why eight players? You're at Uni, you get three lectures a week,
put out a decent side on a Wednesday, but come a Saturday and from a college of
14,000 students and they can't get a team of 11 players out. Shopping?
Studying? Drinking? Probably the latter, but none a decent answer and for the
life of me I can't see a better alternative than playing sport at the weekend with your mates.
All we had to do was keep the ball, pass round them and we'd win. Which
unfortunately we didn't do. Eventually we sorted it out and ground out a tight
9-0 win. Full praise to their blokes that turned up, as they tried their hearts
out, especially their keeper, no.4 and skipper Ross who are pretty decent
players, despite the twirls, and no doubt will give us a stern test when we
face them at home with a full team. Hopefully. Adam scored four and is clearly
the lead scorer in the league and we will miss him in the second half of the
season. Jasper was ill which was of no use to my fantasy league team. I, in
particular, wish him a speedy return. Thanks to Nick and Geoff for umpiring excellently as usual.
