The Ladies’ 5s team was playing away at Thame. For the first time this season we were short on players, particularly on the half line where 4 out of the 5 regular halves couldn’t play. We therefore had to use some of the forward and inner juniors to play these positions, which wasn’t ideal. Further, Dette was working in Banbury until 1230, and she had to make a fast trip down the motorway to join us as soon as she could! We kicked off the warm up practising our short corners (with our effective ping-pong strategy!) In spite of all this, we were all looking forward to our 5's team dinner at Mamma Mia’s that evening!
In the first half we soon realised our opposition were very good at putting pressure on our team in both Ds. The game was fast, and we had many chances at goal, but unfortunately we just couldn’t break through their defenders. Further we found that silly errors like inaccurate passing or people not running towards the ball were quickly pounced on by Thame who then used the opportunity to break towards our goal. We started to loose momentum towards the end of the first half and Thame worked very effectively to secure two goals by half time.
At the break, Susan boosted our team spirit with an encouraging team talk (and some jelly babies!) and we got back on the pitch for the second half with a better idea of what we were dealing with. In the second half we had some great runs down the wings, with wonderful skill from our wing players. There was some lovely distributing from Buffy in the middle. The team was playing better and it showed.
Despite the improvement in our play, we lost the game - but we did have some great breakthroughs with good passes and spatial awareness. Gabs was voted player of the match with her great skill and chances at goal.
Although we lost 3-0, we were pleased with some aspects of the match. It was clear that we missed the vital experience in the half line and that Thame were a better team on the day. It was only our second defeat in 11 games. So onwards to the lovely meal awaiting us!
