Ladies 3s take on Amersham on a dark and gloomy away day

09 November 2013

Ladies' 3s 3 - 0 Amersham & Chalfont Ladies 2s

Hawks ladies 3's went into their match against Amersham & Chalfont 2s with a strong desire to keep their top spot on the ladder and to build on the team work displayed in the second half of the previous week's game. Amersham's pitch on a disused university site plays heavy and slow, and with the advancing gloom Hawks did well to warm up with focus and energy.

After a (very) delayed start time, the girls showed fantastic focus and put the ball in the back of the net within 3 minutes with a great field goal from Rebecca Black, demonstrating her superb positional sense by posting up sharply to the penalty spot and putting the ball straight past the keeper. Hawks went out hard again for a big five minutes and secured most of the possession, but couldn't put the ball past AC's keeper who was on fine form. Strong possessive play from the backs and Caroline, Jacqui, Katharine, and skipper Kim kept Hawks on top.

Most of the first half saw Hawks with the majority of the possession, however Amersham & Chalfont were still hanging in and battling on, often putting 11 behind the ball in the defensive third. Hard work by Jess, Bonnie, Becca, and Rosie through the middle of the pitch was rewarded with plenty of runs on goal. New to the 3s, Lizzie put in a strong performance and coolly played the ball around the AC defence. Saskia, Emily, and Rebecca looked dangerous in front of goal. Amersham & Chalfont succeeded in earning a couple of short corners that were successfully defended by Hawks before a second field goal was converted for Hawks with a rebound being slotted in by Rebecca Cannon after a speedy attack, leaving it 2-0 at half time.

Hawks' work rate in the second half went up a notch and the team displayed some good hockey with simple nice passing. Hawks were on the unlucky side of a few umpiring decisions and were warned a few times about 'tackling from the wrong side' (ahem) and not being five yards away on free hits. Rosie and Bonnie were the unlucky recipients of green cards in quick succession (fantasy league fail) and only minutes from the end a mistimed tackle from Becca Cannon was dramatically rewarded with a yellow card and some time in the sin bin - with Becca paying the price for earlier warnings to the squad.

Hawks maintained their composure well throughout and put sustained pressure on the AC team in the growing darkness. Continuing their solid defensive work throughout, Lottie and Katie admitted no AC players into the defensive D and the odd break through was confidently dealt with by Evelyn.

This led to several opportunities and a number of short corners. The hard work was rewarded with a fabulous team goal with the final combination of passes coming from mum-and-daughter combination in Rebecca and Emily Black, making it two goals for Rebecca and a final score of 3-0. Player of the match was Kim Williams.
