Well, an experienced Hawks 5th team with some good young players took a confident look at a very young Wycombe side, and felt confident of the win right up to the first whistle...then followed about 30 minutes of frantic defense as a very talented Wycombe team pressed, outran, outplayed and out tackled a fairly shambolic Hawks! Our keeper Fergus Flanagan had an excellent first half and somehow only conceded one goal. Then with about 1 minute to go in the half, some good work in mid field managed to create an attack on the left. A forceful cross from Scragg senior was deflected up in the air across the goal, and there was young Robbie Scragg to bury the ball baseball style into the net. Cue shocked celebrations on the Hawks bench, and silence from the Wycombe parents who had rightly been admiring their youngsters play.
At half time a stroke of genius from the Chairman, putting Finn in mid field changed the game. Hawks hardly looked in serious trouble in the second half, were far better organised and balanced, and could have nicked it with about 5 mins to go. A fast break resulted on 3 on 1 with Venables given a clear chance to score, and for the first time in 20 years missed the goal with just the keeper to beat, must have been the torrential rain! Fergus again made some excellent last minute saves to keep things level.
Overall 1-1 was a fair outcome, a fast exciting game, well matched teams and played in a good spirit. Finn was outstanding in midfield, a worthy man of the match, but a good effort from everyone.
