The build up to the match started early as the team sheet went out on the Monday. If only I'd taken a bit more time over it, I may have remembered to nominate a match reporter and there might be a bit more detail in this report!
We had a 15-strong team and managed to find a rare sunny slot in the day. We were all ready and raring to go and got off to a good start with 2 early goals. The first was a Hawks debut for Sophie Temminghoff, which was well deserved. This now takes our number of different scorers to 12 in 7 matches! Linda scored the second from a long ball from Jacs at the back.
Oxford came back against us strong, they were fast and moved the ball on quickly putting us under lots of pressure at the back. They were soon rewarded with a goal to bring the score back to 2-1. Oxford could easily have scored more but Megan was on great form in goal despite staying up til 4am on an activity evening, and made a cracking save with her hand. We got the final goal before half time when Nicky slipped it in off the post. Half time score 3-1 to the Hawks!
The second half saw lots of pressure from both sides. It was a very up and down game. Oxford kept 2 high forwards which really stretched the game and caught us on the hop a few times in the centre of the pitch. Despite feeling under pressure at times, it always felt like we would come out on top and we had some lovely periods of play. 2 of the second half goals came from great distribution out to the right. One from a long ball from Emma to Rebecca via Sophie T which Rebecca crossed in, Sophie B was on the far post and got a lovely reverse stick deflection to extend our lead. Another goal came from Jacqui sending the ball out of a congested D to Rebecca, who pinged it back into the created space and Bethany was there to put it in the back of the net. Oxford had a number of breaks, from which they scored a single goal. Excellent picks of the ball by the girls at the back particularly Phil, Heather, Becky, Emma and Jane kept the Oxford from having too many chances. A player did get through our defence on one occasion but Megan quickly ran out of goal, kicked the ball and left the Oxford player on the floor! Our final goal was a second from Sophie B who's excellent game was rewarded with the honour of Man of the Match. We're looking forward to a vegan cake next week, Sophie! A special mention to the inner line, whose high work rate secured them all MOM votes. Well played, Heather, Lizzie, Sophie T and Bethany.
So despite being frustrating in places, we held it together and proved that we can still secure a win (6-2 no less!) even when everything isn't going our way.
Thanks to Oxford for providing 2 umpires. Especially to the lady with the broken toe who was drafted in at the last minute!
