Oxford Hawks mens 1's v Sutton Valence

02 November 2013

Men's 1s 3 - 1 Sutton Valence Mens 1s

This week saw the Men's 1s making the trip to Sutton Valence, looking for a positive response after 2 disappointing weeks. With a couple of players missing, they welcomed James Gilbert back into the forward line.

It was the away side that started the stronger, moving the ball with purpose, retaining possession whilst looking positive and threatening when appropriate which must of surely brought a slight smile to the coaching staffs faces. However, Sutton Valence took a surprise lead after some good work from ex national prem. player Dave Matthews feeding an unmarked forward on the back post who simply rolled it into the empty goal.

Within 5 minutes though Hawks had drawn level. Winning a penalty corner after some good work from Biggs and Blackburn, the resultant routine ended up with the ball being saved illegally on the line. Penalty stroke, which was slotted home by Biggs. Half time score 1-1.

The second half continued as the first half ended, with hawks being in control of the game whilst the home side were looking dangerous on the break. Hawks then took a 2-1 lead, after another good ball played in from Biggs, Blackburn trapped it on the reverse and managed to lift it over the advancing keeper into the net. It stayed 2-1 until 5 minutes to play, and after a few nervy moments Wood sealed the 3 points after a free flowing counter attack ended up with a tap in on the far post. 3-1, and a good performance to go with it. Next week Hawks entertain Eastbourne at home, looking to push on from this result and climb the table further.
