After a brilliant start for the ladies 5’s we were faced with Buckingham as our opposition. Although we were above them in the table, they hadn’t conceded any goals in the first 5 games! We knew we were going to be up against it but we tried to come out confidently.

We started quite well, and it wasn’t clear who was going to get the first goal. Some brilliant persistence from April saw Buckingham concede their first goal. We couldn’t quite believe we had taken the lead!

This didn’t please the opposition and they upped their game! Olivia made some brilliant saves in goal but they were finally able to slip one past her!

The first half continued very much of end to end hockey, with the forwards doing whatever they could in front of goal with some very tight marking, mids and inner tracking back and forth. The defense continued to clear balls away in less threatening areas of the pitch… if that’s possible against a team like Buckingham.

Half time talk was quite frank and to the point. We all agreed that we needed to use lots of short accurate passes if we were going to stay on terms.

Buckingham came back even stronger and cracks began to show in the team. We started to lose out positions and formation and it wasn’t long before Buckingham was putting goals 2,3,4,5 and 6 past us…With 2 of those goals being scored by us as a team! With some very tired legs and some hit confidence we continued to battle to the end.

It wasn’t a very enjoyable match but their captain did come and say at the end of the game that we were the hardest match they had had and they upped their game! This helped a little, but we were all feeling a little sorry for ourselves.

Man of the match went jointly to April for her constant battling to keep the ball and Olivia… without her the score could have been rather more embarrassing!

We’re ready to pick ourselves back up and get back to our winning ways on Saturday!
