Hawks’ Men’s 6th team maintained their winning streak with a last minute goal at Newbury and Thatcham after a hard fought game.
The boys started well but ended up 1-0 down in the first ten minutes. Rob Oldershaw took a very direct approach, unfortunately to an opposition player’s head rather than the goal, at a short corner. However, Will Smith was more on target with an equaliser and after that the game turned our way.
Hawks’ silky passing and excellent movement from the youngsters made us 4-2 at the break. Newbury may not have been the best hockey players, but were certainly physical, with a few rowdy challenges from some players. However, “Nasty” Nick the enforcer, dealt with it at the back, for the second week running showing his aggressive side. (Typical Spurs fan!)
A great team talk at half time from some of the more experienced players spurred us on into the second half. Unfortunately, Hawks couldn’t seem to find the great team spirit inside us and the game began to slip away. Newbury managed to get 2 more past a highly experienced (but maybe less agile?) defence. Perhaps it was a slight lack of fitness across the team which meant we didn’t maintain possession.
It came down to the last few minutes. Will, with a great run from the half way line, won us a short corner and from this Rob Oldershaw hammered home a late winner.
Well done Newbury - great game.
Man of the match Charlie Stoker – completely dominated the first half! A future 1st XI star in the making.
