With a squad of 11 Hawks Colts and 3 experienced players in the shape of Paul Dunleavy, Russell Warner and Fergus Flanaghan (GK), Hawks faced Oxford in perfect conditions, 5pm at Banbury Road North.
Perfect for the players, with a light rain providing quick pitch conditions, not so perfect for the hardy team of supporters as the rain continued to fall!
After an even first 15 minutes Hawks gradually increased in confidence and possession, with the match largely being played in the Oxford half. James and Jonny were pressing the opposition D, Krishan strong in the left channel and, Toby, Roly and Hamish holding midfield.
Fergus gave excellent support to William as they alternated in goal.
The second half continued with the same pattern and Hawks came close to breaking the dead-lock.
Eventually the pressure told and as Charlie released Jack, his movement created space and after a series of close shaves Toby finished well.
Oxford then had a couple of chances on the break but Ollie Dunn and Ollie Webb held firm supporting the defence of Dunleavy and Warner.
However in the last 10 Hawks continued to press with sustained pressure and James and Jonny always looked dangerous, with their pace causing the defence to stretch.
At the final whistle the result was a fair reflection of the game which was played in an excellent spirit.
Special thanks to Toby’s Dad (as he likes to be called) for helping with the umpiring.
