A Saturday without a hockey match – unthinkable! Let’s arrange a friendly match then. Oxford HC thought a game for their Back to Hockey trainees would be good. We agreed. So selection for this side was anyone who had not played a game on a Saturday this season especially the Back to Hockey people.
So a group of people who had never played before assembled at Headington School. Purdy was delighted to play in goal for us and had a great game. Jan and Julia worked well together at the back. Lily was excellent at marking as left half. Gail did a brilliant job at centre half and then umpired the second half. Becs showed great skills at left half and read the game well.
Emily worked tirelessly as left inner and showed great skill. Jessica did some lovely moves to beat several defenders in succession. Her mother, Becky, proved to be a reliable CF. Chloe, playing left wing got the first goal. She worked the ball into the circle, moved to the back line and then slipped the ball beautifully behind the goalkeeper.
At half-time Linda ceased umpiring and came on at left wing. She did a lovely shot on goal which the keeper cleared – right back to Linda. Big mistake! Linda then took her time to find the corner of the goal. Elly on the right wing, coming back after 5 years of no hockey, went from strength to strength. Demonstrating lovely skills, she took the ball up the right and into the circle and before the defence realised what had happened she had scored the third goal for us.
Deborah agreed a 2-2 draw with their captain. But when she got back to the dugout she found out there were 3 scorers! So the final score was 3-2.
Everyone had a great game and enjoyed themselves. Congratulations to Elly and Chloe who were voted joint players of the match. Thank you to Gail and Linda for umpiring. And Jan brought some scrumptious flapjacks as an after-game treat. Brilliant! When’s the next game?
