Mens 5's put on the "naughty step" by Club Captain for losing

28 September 2013, 12:30

Men's 5s 3 - 5 Northampton Saints Mens 5s

The 5s left for Northampton minus one captain and defensive anchor (how did you crock that knee Tim?), and knowing they had to face Northampton and  - it seemed - most of the Darby family including a not quite identical twin. Deploying just three in midfield seemed to work at first - sort of - and by halftime we had responded to their first goal with a clinical Shirley penalty corner conversion, and various recent returnees - Stephen Elliot sporting a suspicious 'M4' shirt, and Jack Sobey rediscovering the joy of the penetrating pass - were looking good.

Shortly after the Chair's halftime pep talk Charles Darby let the opposition Darbys (Darbies?) know Hawks have the best of the family, by demonstrating the art of scoring while falling over in slow motion. With young bloods Jonny and James looking ever more confident in defence, and mssrs Bentley and Robins running marathons to keep up with their tattoed wonder, ....

However, it was not to be. A third for them, another superb up close Darby conversion (4 in two games now), but the opposition responded with two more in shortish order to leave it 5:3. Bar some profligacy in front of goal, and Callum's saves and dribbling skill on the edge of the D, it could easily have been 6 apiece.

Not the result we wanted, but with crunching tackles from the opposition, and returning players looking good and starting to blend, we have been well prepared for next week's local derby up Headington Hill
