So, on Wednesday we had a healthy squad of 16 as did the 3s. All looking rosy then for the final friendlies before the league season; how then did it come to pass that on match day we turn up with eleven and the 3s only ten? We were therefore much indebted to Gary Mahon, keen for a game with us, who brought all his experience to bear with a fine performance, as well as two goals to boot. Northampton Saints proved the perfect opposition prior to the league season and gave us decent test, although we ran out comfortable winners 3-1. Our new look defence is beginning to take shape, ably marshalled by the vocal James Keeling, while fellow newcomer, the rangy Tom Forrester will be a handful up front this season. We were pretty profligate in front of goal, although their young keeper had a stormer.
Mahon Snr opened the scoring with a rebound from one of our many corners, which he followed up with a marvellous diving effort from a great passing move at the start of the second half; momentarily forgetting how old he was, Gary flung himself to the ground and roofed the ball in on the reverse. Jasper made it three after a polite discourse with Robin as to who would score, before the Saints marched up the other end for a consolation effort. Tom in goal was reliable as ever and Ben and Bruce look a decent pairing in the middle. Thanks to Rob and Nick for some quality blowing, despite what the opposition said.
