A hard fought game saw Buckingham win 3-1.
Both teams were promoted into this league and the equivalent match last year ended in a 12-0 defeat for Hawks, so the match was approached with some trepidation. Sarah Blakey was welcomed to the half back line and the team set out with a positive attitude and determination to concentrate on the press and distribution. The first period saw Hawks a little tentative in the tackle and not able to retain possession and an early goal was conceded when a Buckingham short corner didn’t go to plan but was adeptly slotted away from the player on the post.
This seemed to wake the team up and as they managed to absorb the pressure and gradually worked their way back into the game, causing Buckingham to make mistakes and allow some attacking moves. It was from one of these that Emily Black confidently put the ball past the keeper after a quick break down the left, and took the score to 1:1.
Hawks put together some outstanding play and had some good chances on goal which went unrewarded. It looked as though the score would stay the same until half time when a quick free hit was taken and the Hawks defence were caught napping. So it was 2-1 at half time.
The second half saw the team absorb more pressure and then turn it back to test the Buckingham defence. A cynical tackle by the opposition (rewarded with a yellow card) and later a committed attempt at goal resulted in injuries to both Laura and Emily and the team regrouped for the last 15 minutes. Hawks had several close attempts at goal, and at the other end there was some strong defending particularly from Katie Cannon and solid saves from Evelyn. It was left to the last minute of the game for Buckingham to score their third.
A commendable team effort from all concerned and plenty of positives to take into next week.
