A hard fought game saw the 5's start off at sixes and sevens against an interesting 6th team made up of a mixture of youngsters and old(ish) men.
After a couple of good saves from Callum Chapman, the 5ths started stringing some passes together to show the 6's that they wouldn't have it all their own way. With good performances from Jonny Florey and james Blenkinsop at the back, the midfield started to gel, with Rory Bowden and Ashley Robins making some headway. Charles Darby started where he left off from from last season to strike first - albeit against the run of play. The half time chat from the skipper obviously did no good whatsoever as the 6ths came at the senior team hard and it was a relief when Adam Bentley finished off a good passing move to go 2 up.
The 5ths sat back a bit then, and the 6's got a deserved goal set up by ex 5's player he "sicknote" Shirley, returning to action after a whole season out with a slight muscle strain...
Showing great resilience, with chairman Higgins leading the way, the 5's kept the 6's at bay only for the 6's to score a messy goal from a short corner, and it looked like the bragging rights would be shared until a deliciously slick passing movement going all the way from the 6's D up to Charles Darby to slot home with minutes remaining.
It wasn't pretty, but if the team can show this resilience and work rate this season then it will be some way towards preserving their new found league 6 level.
Well done to messrs Scragg jnr Rogers jnr and Spittles jnr for their 6th XI performance
and thanks to Timmy Martin and Ben Morris for umpiring.
