The 22nd September, a day to be remembered as yet, along with players from Oxford and Witney, another Hawks team takes flight!

After a great deal of time and energy taken by Caroline, Jackie and others, the Golden Eagles make a great start to their Veteran League campaign.

Leaving Oxford with only 10 players was not the ideal scenario.  With half of the team aged over 55 this was always going to be a challenge.  After eating and drinking our way though some sausage baps and cups of tea, we ventured out onto the pitch to see the opposition warming up in military style; all sixteen of them.  We were still waiting on player number 10 to turn up so tried to delay the start as much as possible but were forced to start with nine. Gail overheard Haslemere discussing the possibility of lending us a player or two once they were ahead by a couple of goals.

Our game plan was a fairly defensive one, only playing with two up front.  Although to be honest with great leads and termination from Sarah Dawson and Marianne Bint it didn’t feel that we were an Eagle down.  The first goal came from a well deserved short corner from a typical Jacqui Barlow strike straight into the corner of the goal.

To our relief player number ten turned up which game us more opportunity to push forward from the midfield.  With superb communication and tactical play we managed to control the game. It was a bit disheartening to see the frequent player rotation by the other team but it only seemed to spur us on to keep the score at 1.0 at half time.

The second goal came from Sarah Dawson with, and I quote ‘I just smashed it in from the top of the D’ 2.0; they were not happy.  Needless to say they decided not to offer us a player or two.  Another goal from Sarah was the icing on the cake.

A special mention to Evelyn, Gail and Caroline at the back who kept the opposition at bay when they did managed to penetrate the midfield. The energy and precise passing from the midfield along with the unrelenting determination from all on the pitch made this a very memorable and enjoyable maiden flight.  I look forward to the next match and hopefully we will have a few more players to join us for our first season. A special thanks to Caroline Baggs for getting this all off the ground and giving us all a great day to remember.
