Sonning 2 Hawks 1
One cloudy, warm autumn day saw Hawks 4s travel away to take on Sonning in their opening league match of the season. With a mixed bag of 3s, 4s, 5s and newbies, plus no subs, skipper Catherine was undeterred to let this affect her as she galvanised her troops. Sonning started the stronger as Hawks took their time to gel. Pressing hard in the Hawks’ half of the pitch, the defence were working tirelessly from the off. However Hawks soon started to string some passes together, with Jane and Sophie working well on the right to feed the ball through to the forwards. Having been drilled at training in ‘Setting The Press’, this set piece was the key focus of Hawk’s game this week, and proved effective in hassling theSonning defence. Mistakes began to creep into their gamewhich Linda and Rebecca exploited to produce some superb near misses... Sonning however turned the tables and, having found a gap in the defence, managed to break the deadlock.
The second half started more evenly. Sonning relied on their speedy youngsters and extra players to move the ball forward but Phil and Becky defended well to thwart their attacks, though Olivia was often called upon to make some fantastic saves. Hawk’s own speedy youngster Bethany soon proved her weight in gold with a neat cross under the goalie to level the scores. With Catherine spilling the ball left and right, Hawks made the most of the space created on the pitch to keep pressing the Sonning defence but to no avail. On the left Nicky and Gail worked hard to move the ball forward, but the lack of subs and match fitness began to take its toll andSonning pressed Hawks back in the dying minutes. A mad scramble in the D resulted in the final goal of the game going to the home team.
A well played game by all where the result did not reflect the standard of play. Players’ Player went to Nicky for her endless running and great touches as first runner at short corners.
