It was probably the lack of bendy lines that threw the Mens 5's as they opened up the 2013/2014 season at Brookes.
Against a well organised team, HAwks took a time to get playing some decent hockey, and while they acclimatised to the better opposition, 3 qoals were conceded in a short time.
With some young (and old!) blood in the side, there were some early cobwebs at the back and alongside a failure to hold the ball up in the Oxford half, the half time score of 3-0 was slightly harsh but not far off.
The second half saw Hawks pass the ball round the pitch much more, and Oxford resort to thump and see, and with Tim Webster proving a handful having been moved up front, the deserved Hawks goal materialised, and as a sighter at what they can expect in league 6, it was a very useful experience.
Welcome back to Hawks hockey to DAvid Gautrey and JAck Sobey, and the energetic Henry Manuel - who likened the first half experience to holding a matchstick - which to be honest was what it looked like....however the old Manuel showed his true colours once he realised it was actually a hockey stick.
Other notable feature of the game was their umpire sending his own son off for impersonating a kick boxer move on Jonny Florey.
Many thanks for Torbs for umpiring, although his comment to the skipper that he was a dirty player seemed slightly unfair...
We've lost the first skirmish, but the war is a long one, we still have to play Oxford 4 more times this season.....l
