The men's 1st XI continued their pre season preparation with their first home fixture against Robinsons Hockey Club. They welcomed into the side a couple of fresh faces, in the form of Matthew Wood and Kit Cutter, as well as two returning Hawks; Rob Dunnill and Tim Chilvers who have come home after gallivanting off to their respective Universities.

With the game being played in 3x 25 minute 3rds, Hawks took immediate control retaining the ball well and looked threatening from the off. First blood went to the men in maroon, after some good work by the forwards the ball was turned over high up the pitch which allowed David Cresswell to drive to space and slot the ball past the keeper. Hawks kept the intensity high and were further rewarded soon after, again through Cresswell and a smart finish into the netting. 2-0.

After the break, Robinson's came out and managed to get a hold on the game, whilst Hawks began to make the mistakes which coach Daniel Newcombe had banned before the start. A good Robinson move led to the forward having almost an empty goal to finish in, only for Daniel Money to dive John Terry esq. and head it clear, meaning a stroke was awarded. 2-1. As the 2nd third went on, Hawks got themselves back up to an acceptable level of play and managed to extend their lead. After good work from Matthew Richardson, he threaded a neat ball though to the former full back Drew Blackburn who deftly deflected it past the goalkeeper. 3-1, which was how it stayed until the break.

The final 3rd belonged to the away side, as Hawks began to turn the ball over unnecessarily again and were trying passes that probably weren't an option. With 10 to play, it looked as if Hawks may hold out for the win. However, Martin Pickups pocket was picked on the 25, perhaps unfairly, and the forward smashed it bottom left. 2 minutes later, they were awarded an extremely dubious corner which they converted meaning the game ended up 3-3.

There were many positives for the men in maroon which they will take forward to next week as they continue their preparation for the league which starts in October.
