First game of the season and a makeshift 4s had a friendly against local rivals Oxford, which resulted in a highly satisfactory 4-2 win. Having lost the likes of Ed Bray and Ben Cowan, we welcomed newcomers Elliott Bennett, known to many at the club, James Keeling, resplendent in his vintage Beeston HC top and Will Cairns from Reading, but we won't hold it against him. James and Rob Homes were excellent at the back, while Chris and Dave were calm personified. Oxford opened the scoring after some excellent advantage by the away umpire, but Will responded on his debut. Bruce, potentially man of the match for his tireless running, ran the midfield while Marky Mark tormented their defence as expected. He scored, plus a brilliant own goal widened the deficit, before Oxford responded. Mark was assaulted to give us a stroke and Charlie put away the stroke with the minimum of fuss, and the minimum of technique and ability. But they all count. All in all, an excellent performance on our first outing, which bodes well for the season.
