Oxford Hawks Ladies' 1s played their first friendly match of the new season on Saturday, and looked sharp and determined from the start. Hawks, welcoming Clare King back into the defence after maternity break, dominated the early stages, creating many chances which were well saved by the Swansea goalkeeper. The home side finally broke the deadlock when Briony Anyon scored from a short corner. Hawks went 2-0 up shortly after, with a well worked goal, starting in defence, involving about 9 players in the build-up. Finally they worked the ball to the left hand side where Emily Court displayed exceptional skills to dribble past 2 Swansea players, before crossing to Lex Thomas who finished well despite under huge pressure.
Swansea pulled one back with a fortunate deflection, but Hawks extended their lead shortly afterwards with a clinical short corner strike from Kirsty Chapman. In the last 20 minutes, the Welsh visitors piled on the pressure and it paid off, with a well struck short corner making the score 3-2. However the Hawks defence held out for an encouraging first win of the season, and they look forward to the start of their league campaign in less than 2 weeks, on 14 Sept.
