The MBBO Div 5 champions travelled – a surprisingly long way – to Banbury for their final game of the season with a ridiculously late start, considering we had the Club Dinner to take into consideration as our main priority. We arrived en masse with the maximum squad of 16 players in the hope of celebrating what has been a great season, which began fraught with no captain and a brand new set of players to the club. However, this warm glow of self-satisfaction for a season well done was quickly erased as we stood on the sidelines waiting to get on the pitch as soon as possible, while the previous one sided match overran (I think it ended 0-16), when the umpire – resplendent in his EHU jacket ran over and bluntly banished us from the ground. Nice. “I do hope we get him for our game”, one wag said. True enough, he blew us – pretty well in truth with his partner, but both were disciplinarians as cards were freely bandied to both teams, in what we thought was a decent, even match played in an excellent spirit. Shame – it never feels good to be shouted at from the off. Dunners played excellently at the back and player of the season Jasper got a bit twitchy as Robin closed on him in the goal charts tally. Phil K, who has been excellent for us since joining us from the 5s was a surprise on the scoresheet and Mark Mills who also joined us from the 5s was man of the match. All it needed was us to sprint off after the game to put on our finery for the Club Dinner, where we proceeded to disgrace ourselves – still as a team – with some awful dancing, led off by the ever reliable Tom Biggs.
