Hawks Mens 1's v Staines

02 March 2013

Men's 1s 3 - 1 Staines Men's 1s

Hawks travelled down the M40 for an early 11:30 start. The changing rooms registered -3C on the thermometer, a picturesque walk around the football pitch found the hockey pitch hard and sandy.  The pitch was not going to be conducive to fast flowing game of hockey especially for evergreen James Ward whose was sporting his homemade truss. Hawks started the brighter, Pickup seeing several of his shots fly past the post or saved by the keeper. Indicative of the season, a pressure relieving aerial ball by Andy Seiman struck a wire which went across the width of the pitch supporting a divider net. The ball dropped down to a Staines player who entered the Hawks D, a few half tackles saw the ball go loose to a Staines attacker, he made no mistake with a firm shot. Despite the set back Hawks enjoyed most of the possession and were rewarded after Sam Chilvers deflected a cross from Charlie Ellison, Pickup getting a final touch. Hawks went further ahead from a Charlie Ellison converted short corner.  Half time Hawks 2  Staines 1.

The second half saw Hawks create a number of chances and several short corners, but failed to increase the lead. Staines had several chances of their own, dependable Phil Hargraves in goal making a number of smothering saves.  Deservedly Hawks went 3 : 1 up after Sam Chilvers picked up a rebound off the keeper from a short corner flick. Andy Seiman received a yellow, being deemed to have broken down play. MOM Nick Lamb marshalled the midfield for Hawks to run down the clock for a deserved victory
