The pre match preparation focused on the need for discipline, passing and keeping a cool head. Despite their low position in the league Hawks had struggled to secure a draw pre Christmas by coming back from 3-1 down. This was not going to happen in the return home fixture.
This was thrown out of the window immediately the game started-so much for pre match team talks!
Staines took the game to Hawks who could not settle and made silly mistakes including passes to the Staines forwards at the top of their own D. Step up the experience of Humphries in Goal and Dawson on short corners.
Whilst Humphries was keeping the well worked short corner routine from Staines at bay, with 3 excellent saves Dawson was taking short corners at the other end and smashing them past the Staines keeper almost at will. After quickly racing to 4 goals Dawson was then invited to change the direction of his shot to the bottom left corner. Again the ball smashed to the target and Hawks were leading 4 nil.
The second half saw Hawks dominate play and further chances went begging. One open goal made by Dawson on the right with a slip to Tyler Simpson saw him manage to find the outside of the post when scoring would have been easier. Simpson will reflect on his performance and a certain award received after the game.
Dave Barber then managed to prevent a further goal by getting his foot in the way of a ball heading into the goal when trying to finish from close range.
Staines pulled a goal back during a lapse in concentration and a juggling of midfield structure, but the game was beyond doubt by a well finished goal by Hugh Brannan and a fifth goal for Dawson right on the final whistle.
Man of the Match could have gone to either Humphries or Dawson. Hugh Brannan at times was also excellent. However despite the reality of a result that could have been 6-6, five goals from Dawson takes the accolade. Anyone who has him in their fantasy league team will be delighted!!
