Mens 5's blow Bracknell away with powerful first half display

16 February 2013, 16:30

Men's 5s 6 - 2 Bracknell Men's 3s

A 4.30 Away slot at Bracknell, does little to motivate most teams, yet the depth in Hawks Mens section was enough to produce an accomplished victory away at Bracknell. Amongst a number of impressive individual displays were two Colts. James Blenkinsop produced a Man of the Match performance at the back, and Archie Spittles in his debut for the 5ths in goal, wasn't far behind.

Hawks started well with early pressure from some excellent possession, and Charles DArby managed to finish off from a penalty corner, with Adam Bentley converting again soon after.

2-0 up and the HAwks team were slicing through the Bracknell formation at will. Despite missing both Webster boys, the forwards - messrs Hack, Darby Bentley and Bishop were too much for the Bracknell defence. With Mark Mills bossing the middle, it was all going well. Phil Kynaston got in on the act from another short corner 3-1. Then followed some quick attacking from the Bracknell forwards which forced a short after an excellent save by Archie Spittles in goal. Not long after that, a similar incursion caused the elder Skipper Spittles to foul the lively Bracknell CF as a ball came in from outside the D, only for both attacker and defender to miss the ball and beat a helpless Archie in goal - goal awarded (it should probably have been a flick!) 3-1 - a warning!

Hawks recovered with 2 more goals before half time by Rich Venables and Mark Mills, 5-1 and we were flying. The second half saw a more open game, and a rejuvenated Bracknell side, and they soon scored a second with some good attacking play resulting in a flick to the top left hand corner. Hawks slowly regained the upper hand though, with some great wide play by Blenkinsop, and Richard Venables scored a 6th for Hawks with an excellent mazy run past 5 Bracknell players to finish in the bottom left of the goal. This was one occasion when he was let off for not passing the ball.....

This was an enjoyable game, played in an excellent spirit by both sides. The 5's have now lost only once in the last 10 games, and had they played like this at the beginning of the season, they would be challenging for promotion alongside the other Hawks Mens teams.........
