Travelling to Newbury will often define the destiny of a season. It will be interesting to see if this is the case. Playing conditions were made a little tricky as Hawks played into bright sunshine in the first half. This was compounded by little communication on the pitch. However it was Hawks who were exerting pressure with Newbury defending in numbers and happy to hit Hawks on the break.
A goal was needed to unlock the game and the tight pressing took possession and the move involving Clark and Poulter, found Simpson with space in the D as Newbury were caught napping. With only the goal keeper to beat Simpson coolly slid the ball left to Poulter who finished into an empty net.
A fine first goal deserved more in the 1st half but Newbury stayed resolute with their midfield making every effort to break any momentum Hawks established.
The pattern continued in the 2nd half however the game was effected by some interesting umpiring in the half Hawks were attacking. Giving obstruction for a worked short corner move was probably the highlight.
Hawks continued to dominate possession and Dawson ruefully reflected on a couple of short corner chances which on another day he would have buried. The game was then won with a move which saw Dawson on the right provide a defence splitting pass finding Simpson in space and with an open goal. He duly dispatched and Torbs made it 3 0 after taking over short corner striking duty.
The result was deserved but Humphries in goal was still called upon to make 2 fine saves to keep a clean sheet. AS the game moved to its conclusion a combination of increasingly assertive pressure by Newbury, with an incident involving Boyden which could potentially have caused injury went unpunished. Hawks frustration began to show with some of the decisions leading to green cards but it was just question of seeing the game out-which they did.
Man of the Match was again Andy Clark over 4 or 5 candidates. Hugh Brannan had an excellent debut and the performance of Rory Phibbs, Paul Poulter and Josh Turner ensured Humphries only had 2 or 3 excellent saves to make.
