First game back after the European-style winter break and looking resplendent in their new kit, looking not unlike the AC Sparta Praha home shirts, the 4s faced dogged opposition in the shape of Eastcote HC. This time around the opposition didn’t bother with a line up of three youthful attackers whose combined total age was younger than Boggs, but like us relied on age and experience. However, our overall quality shone through, aided by Ferret’s quality upfront, who ran the line while giving our forwards a valuable coaching session at the same time. Ed Bray dominated the midfield and although Eastcote showed a lot of pluck, we ran out comfortable winners. Tom Boggs Jr was only called into action once with a fine corner save and Dave Cook had a fine game at left half.
Ferret bagged a brace, as did Robin Finnegan, who has been a revelation this season and took his tally to nine goals – and top scorer - so far. Reuben finished off the scoring with his first of the season, long overdue but reward for his efforts and hopefully this will be a watershed moment for him. Or, maybe not. At the back, pathetically Atkins came off with cramp in his calves and Boggs Sr also ended the game early, claiming his hands were so cold he couldn’t hold his stick. Hardened pros, both. Many thanks to Nick and Scraggy for umpiring so well.
Sterner challenges face us in the coming weeks, not least a 4pm start in bloody Brent Cross next week.
