The day started in the clubhouse with a short introductory coaching session to the ‘W’ formation by Jacs, the Club Captain. Unsure of how it would work on pitch, and knowing we needed to win this match, we took to our new positions with the mind-set of ‘triangles’ and ‘channels’.
We started strongly with solid hits and accurate passing. The full-backs and the inners worked closely together to keep the channels covered whilst the defence made some great tackles and the attack had some great breaks. The team were working well in the new formation, although a few wandering players were brought back to their new positioning by the calls of Becky, Jacs and Wendy in defence.
The first goal of the match was scored by Wychwood, but was certainly not one of great finesse. A little downbeat by this initial result, the fives set to a remarkable comeback. The first two Hawk’s goals, scored by Rebecca and Emma, occurred within minutes of each other and ignited the fire for a clear win.
The second half was much faster and feistier with our attack making some great plays for the ball and Becky and Wendy defending some cracking balls. The goal score continued in in our favour with a second goal from Rebecca, a fantastic shot by Lissy and a powerful hit by Lotty during a short corner. Despite some good efforts by Wychwood, it was the Hawks that dominated the match.
The match was called to an early end due to a collision between two Hawks players, but fortunately they are both OK, and no serious injuries were caused.
Bring on 2013!
Player of the match was awarded to Emma O’Hara
