Men's 2's undefeated season finishes on a 4-0 high at Eastcote

Men's 2s 4 - 0 Eastcote Men's 1s

After 8 months I can't deny I wasn't sorry to see the season finally finish away at Eastcote on Wednesday evening. This was a "clear up" game delayed because of a Covid outbreak 2 weeks earlier. Unhappily nothing turned on the outcome other than, for Hawks, the small matter of finishing a 22 game League season undefeated . Having played 21 games the 2's had finished 3rd in the League recording 13 wins and, sadly, 8, (too many) draws -  but no side had, to date, managed to lower our colours.

The temptation just to bin the game was resisted by both Hawks, (for good reason - given the desire to get through the entire League programme tackle intact) and Eastcote - to their great credit (and with Hawks thanks) as in their mid table sanctuary the outcome really mattered little, if at all. (That could possibly be the most grammatically complex sentence I have fashioned so far this season).

Both sides had a number of absentees but this was , in the end, an entertaining contest watched by a small crowd most of whom had come up from Oxford and to whom go the side's thanks. They saw an entertaining contest which really was never in doubt as our boys took an early lead through Henry Taylor from a short corner "variation" - the first of the season!!!. Further goals followed at regular intervals from Lewis, Taylor again and a beauty created by Matteo and Adam Hamid, the scorer, making his debut. Half time 4-0 and coasting.

Everyone committed at the break to keep the pressure on so obviously that didn't happen. When it actually came to it, Eastcote upped their game, but despite some near misses at both ends, and especially a couple of outstanding saves by both keepers, the season finally fizzled out, although we were happy enough with the outcome.

Full marks to the youngsters Matteo, Rory and Adam who all contributed fully to the evening's events so their respective parents will , I hope, at least have felt the trip was worthwhile after all the changes of date and time during the previous two weeks of arrangements. Equally full marks to the rest of the side for volunteering to play (some in response to gentle cajoling). No one more relieved than me to get this one done and dusted.

So - an extraordinary season - tinged with more than a little disappointment that we won't be in a higher division next season but very clear that, after having the chance in the last couple of weeks to see what  young talent this club has in the 3's,competition for places in this squad is likely to be intense in September.

Thanks also to both my readers who have followed these insane weekly ramblings with extraordinary fortitude - you sad individuals.

It's been a lot of fun.

I've no idea what to do on Saturday!!
