Ladies' 5s take it right to the wire to avoid relegation

02 April 2022, 14:00, Henwick

Ladies' 5s 3 - 2 Newbury & Thatcham Ladies' 2s

On a surprisingly sunny day, the ladies 5s team started off the match with a fast goal from Sherene. There was some great attacking play from our forwards but unfortunately no follow up goals were achieved. Newbury then scored a shocking goal that took us by surprise and a tense half time was called.

After half time, Newbury scored an amazing goal from the top of the D raising the score in their favour. However, Sherene then scored a fantastic goal which helped raise morale and enthusiasm as the team confidently kept pushing the ball into Newbury's half. Sherene and Karen then worked together to score the final goal, which ensured Hawks was in the lead with only 10 minutes to go.

Everyone played exceptionally well, with 6 players nominated but Lucille deservedly just got POM. The ladies 5s really stepped up when it mattered. To go down a goal and then to come back in the last 12 minutes for a win with two goals was outstanding and it’s a real testament to the effort and determination of the whole team. And all this was accomplished despite the 2 minutes of snow!

However we had to wait until after 7pm to hear the other important result of Oxford’s match. Thankfully they drew in their match and Hawks 5s secured 10th place in the league out of the relegation zone. Coming from bottom place and 7 points adrift at Christmas, the last half season has seen an amazing effort and turnaround by the 5s so well done to everyone who played their part in the fight back.
