Mens 7's end season on a high

Men's 7s 2 - 1 Aylesbury Development

  • Men's 7s v Aylesbury 001
  • Men's 7s v Aylesbury 002

When we played Aylesbury in the first half of the season we made a certain win into a near defeat.  We led Aylesbury 5-0 at half time only to concede 5 in the second half to limp home with a draw.

This was our final game of the season and we already had promotion in the bag but were keen to finish the job.

The line up was one featuring classic 7's veterans with some of our younger squad succumbing to COVID, so no Dolly, Burroughs or Wells. We did have our talisman Theo in goal after a morning of school hockey and Elliott up front and Nick Tonkin and Sam Volans providing a bit of pace.

Common sense seemed to evade us to begin with and we persisted in giving the ball away cheaply.  Hawks had much of the territory though but squandered some early chances.  Aylesbury pushed two men high and generally Hawks were able to soak up any pressure although they possessed a few useful players in midfield.  Theo dealt with most danger confidently.  Hawks got a few early PC's and at the second Elliott collected a rebound to make it 24 for the season and to put us 1-0.

Shortly after the break a defensive mix up allowed one of the high men to pull the score back to 1-1. Aylesbury seem to then tire and Hawks pretty much dominated the rest of the 2nd half.  Sam V patrolled the midfield well keeping a constant barrage of balls into the D, although none of the forwards were able to finish despite a few near misses and many far misses including a memorable Andy Graham 9 iron. He also tracked back well and made sure any breaks were extinguished.  Hawks got a succession of PC's which neither Shirley or Venables could convert from direct hits.  Tactics were changed and we slipped the ball right and Sam V slapped the ball hard to the goal which was deflected in by an Aylesbury stick and the game finished 2-1.

Thanks to Jacqui and Jim for umpiring and for Jan for keeping the teas going and bar open.

Next year we hit the heights of the Men's Cherwell Division 1.  It has been a great season. Won 12/ Lost 3/ Drawn 3 At times we have played some great passing hockey.  At other times we have passed the ball freely to the oppo, kicked it, missed it...etc.  But most of all we have had great fun and it has been great to see our junior keeper Theo Eleftheriadis progress so well this season.  We all enjoyed a great night out at the Rose and Crown superbly hosted by Steve Jones and a curry to finish.  Here's to next season.....
