Reggie misses Men's 2's shambling performance at Havant

19 March 2022, 13:15, Havant College

Men's 2s 2 - 2 Havant Men's 2s

Reggie, my son's Cocker Spaniel is a very needy dog. So, with his family away in France, and the woman who manages the Hawks kitchen (hereinafter known as TWWMTHK) fully employed over the weekend knocking up 300 plus Baked Potatoes I was left at home on dog sitting duties. No trip to Havant for me. Not a lot of fun when you're sweating on the outcome of a crucial game in the Division's (tight as) promotion contest with the boys playing on the south coast.

As it turned out I needn't have worried as the game went as expected with the 2's meekly surrendering  2 points to Havant 2's in a 2-2 draw

According to the coach, who was there, we were awful, and really deserved nothing more.

So , the statistician in me notes that is three post Christmas away league games played against the bottom three sides in the division - three draws recorded - and three points picked up. Or - put another way -six points chucked away down the Swanee never to be recovered. As my more erudite and well read devotees will recognise this is a reference to the Suwanee River which flows from the Okefenokee Swamp in South Georgia to the Gulf of Mexico - but you probably knew that anyway.

As some of you may know reference to the Swanee River comes from "The Old Folks at Home" a celebrated Old Minstrel Song composed by none other than Stephen Foster (1826 - 1864) with whom my regular readers will be only too familiar.

"Way down upon de Swanee ribber                                                                                             Far far away                                                                                                                                 Dere's where my heart is turning ebber                                                                               Dere's where de old folks stay"

Don't ever suggest you don't find these reports educational.

So ended a somewhat disastrous Saturday what with Basingstoke picking up three points.

At least the boys managed to bring home the same number of team shirts as they took - that's a first - every cloud etc

Going for a walk with Reggie now.

I despair.
