L6s finish season with 3rd win in a row

19 March 2022, 11:45, Headington School

Ladies' 6s 4 - 1 Oxford Ladies 5s

  • Team March 2022 001

With a couple of some last minute changes to the team and having to negotiate the Oxford ring road traffic closures, the L6s met under bright sunshine at Headington School, knowing that anything other than a win would see them left one off the bottom of their league and relegation a possibility.

With Teyha back in goal and Lotty taking charge of the subbing routine the first half started with opportunities for both sides to take the lead. Oxford were kept at bay with great saves from Teyha, an impressive goal-line clearance from Holly and dogged determination from Jan's defensive stick work. Meanwhile the inner line of Caitlin, Marion and Lucille were making some great linking play out from defence to the forwards who were being denied any reward by some stout Oxford defence. Oxford continued to hold firm at short corner time for Hawks when Harri was called up to strike.

The deadlock was broken when, after 29 mins, Oxford managed to make the most of an unseen foot assist to get the ball over the Hawks goal-line. As ever with the L6s, going a goal behind brought out their determination and desire to get to the ball first. The half-time whistle was looming when Hannah got the final touch from a quick free hit played into the D to see the scores level as the whistle blew.

Sweets consumed and wise words said, the L6s got back out and into the game quicker that Oxford. After just 6 mins, Bernie opted for the transfer back to Phil whose through ball moved on by Lucille found Pollyanna eagerly awaiting to strike. Hawks were now 2-1 up. 4 mins later and it was Caroline who made a great play out of defence to find Pollyanna. Her run with ball up half of the pitch to find Cat, ready to pounce with a reverse hit strike to secure Hawks' 3rd goal.

Oxford continued to press forward but continued to be denied a second goal as Hawks defence held strong. With Buffy and Bernie, in Yas' absence, distributing the ball to both sides, Caroline and Holly offering support up the side-lines, inners Caitlin, Marion and Lucille driving into the D and forwards Linda, Pollyanna, Hannah and Cat switching upfront positions, the fourth and final goal finally came as Hannah drove forward passing to Cat whose strike from top of the D made a resounding sound as it hit the back board. Hawks didn't relax until the final whistle was blown!

The L6s came away with some bruises and sun-burned faces to go with the win but it was smiles and cheers all round for a great team performance! We then enjoyed Marion's baking delights while voting for our POM - most votes this week went to co-captain Jan!
