Boring draw for Men's 4s

05 March 2022, 15:00, Banbury Road North (Near)

Men's 4s 1 - 1 Wallingford Men's 2s

It was one goal apiece in a fairly drab encounter between Oxford Hawks men’s 4s and Wallingford 2s.  Neither side were able to gain a foothold in the fixture, so both sides had to settle for a point at an eerily quiet BRN.

In a frantic opening twenty minutes Hawks surrendered possession of the ball too often, providing Wallingford with the opportunity to spring a surprise result on the home side. Fortunately, Hawks were resolute in defence with MoM Danny Johnson a standout performer on the day. Before the half was over, Hawks managed to take the lead through a well dispatched Luke Piper penalty corner – a forward in good form.

Hawks agreed about one thing at the half-time interval – they were coasting, and there were several more gears that could be utilised. Unfortunately, though, they were not to be found. Hawks continued to hold on to the ball, failed to execute their passes and miss-trapped the ball far too much. Eventually, Wallingford would make them pay for their errors – a well-rehearsed penalty corner routine saw the opposition achieve parity approximately ten minutes in to the second half. Hawks suddenly found themselves with some work to do.

The equaliser did spur Hawks into action, and for the remainder of the second half it would be fair to say the home side had Wallingford on the back foot. A disallowed Luke Piper goal – for a wild swing-and-a-miss before canning the ball in the goal at the second time of asking – was the closest Hawks came to regaining their lead. However, it would remain 1-1  at the full-time whistle with Hawks feeling bitterly disappointed. It was very out of sorts performance for the 4s – hopefully a one-off with a big fixture against table-toppers Abingdon next up.
