Hard-working L4s unable to convert against a strong Sonning side

12 February 2022, 12:00, Berkshire Sports and Social Club

Ladies' 4s 0 - 3 Sonning Ladies 2s

A slightly depleted ladies 4s side made the journey to Sonning in blustery weather to face Sonning Ladies 4s, who were just a couple of points ahead in the league table. Many thanks to everyone who arranged for the shirts and GK kit to be in the right place at the right time! Despite the temptations of the food van parked up just outside the pitch, Hawks L4s put together a focused warm up and a great pre-match briefing by interim captain Vicky.

Hawks began well, held strongly in the middle by guest star Kara (more on our intrepid Scots centre half later). The Hawks side has been working on building play and making more of our time in possession of the ball to create shots and shorts. We certainly had that in spades against Sonning, with lots of decisive movement from inners Rom, Yas, and Katie. Sonning were on fighting form and demonstrated that early on with a green card for one of their players.

Hawks had good periods of attack in Sonning’s D but couldn’t quite make the connections to put a goal away. Sonning were quick to turn over the ball and make swift connections, more than once catching the Hawks side on the back foot. One such turnover in the first half resulted in Sonning’s first goal, putting them 1-0 up by half time after our visiting GK Grace couldn’t quite get to the lower right post in time.

The Hawks side was still focused at half time and determined to turn the score around, but only moments into the second half, Kara was taken out by a wee bit of a savage follow-through from a Sonning player. With our usually indestructible ladies’ captain sidelined with a battered wrist, Hawks faltered and allowed Sonning to score a second goal. Play got a bit scrappy from thereon in, and Rom paid the price for a rushed tackle with the second green card of the game. Her two minutes were up quickly and she dashed back onto the pitch determined to make up for her breather.

Hawks then entered a promising period of short corners and strikes on the D, with Rebecca, Kim, Abi, Molly, and Fran all denied the chance to pull back a goal by the Sonning defence. We tried every short corner configuration we have, but were disappointed each time – slightly unbalanced by not having all of our usual short corner crew available.

Hawks never gave up and were able to demonstrate some solid play built from the back, with very few corners conceded by ace defenders Vicky, Fran, Alice, and Abi, but alas Sonning made it 3-0 by taking their chances when they had them.

All in all, a frustrating outcome for Hawks with a few good demonstrations of the kind of attacking play we’ve been working hard on at training in recent weeks. Player of the match was Charlotte G for her tireless defensive work. Also, glad to report that Kara’s x-ray showed no breaks to her wrist. Recover quickly, Kara!
